Introducing Satya

Satya.JPG

Let me introduce you to Satya.

She joined our home in 2001 at the young age of six.  Satya is one of a small handful of children in our homes with both her parents, but was accepted because her situation was so dire.  Her father was a poor rice farmer and her mother who would often be drunk and violent.

Satya didn’t speak a word of English when she joined our home and was very shy.  One of the best ways to get children to get out of the cycle of poverty in India is by giving them a quality English education.  So along with the other children in the home she attended a local private English medium school.

It was a struggle for her for quite a few years, but through her perseverance and diligence, as well as the support from our staff she learnt to speak and write in English and over many more years flourished as a student.  She has grown up into a lovely young woman with so much potential and many opportunities before her.

Right now she is in her second year of an MBA in Andhra UNiversityhas also started University, the first person in her family to get an education past high school. What a different life she will have now.  I wonder what the future will hold for her?  She is in this situation now because a couple of young people in New Zealand decided to sacrifice some of their hard earned money to invest into a girl on the other side of the world.
